Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is also known as Darjeeling Zoo and extended in approximately 67 acre land at Darjeeling city in the West Bengal. The Zoo is one of the largest high altitude zoo with the on around evolution seven thousand feet and was opened in 1958. It is only Zoo in India that is globally known for its breading Programs of Red Panda, Wolf of Himalayan and Snow Leopards and other Siberian Tigers, Yaks and lots more animals. The Darjeeling Zoo is a joint venture of Government of country (Department of Science and Technology) and West Bengal Government.
The Darjeeling Zoo was dedicated by Late Former Prime Minister of India to Padmaja Naidu who was the daughter of Sarojini Naidu (A famous Poet and Leader). The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoo is situated in the foothill of Birch Hill (Also known as Jawajhar Parvat). The Darjeeling Zoo is one of the best Zoos in the World. It is only Indian Zoo that received an International Award "The Earth Heroes" in 2014 out of more than three hundreds Zoo in the global. The Award is given by the RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland) and British Govt. The Darjeeling Zoo has been playing a perfect job to conserving Himalayan Animals and plantations, especially for those breeding animals that are used to Alpine conditions.
The lush green and covered with forest Darjeeling Zoo also gives a beautiful attraction of Himalayan flora that magnets many nature lovers to this place. The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is top India’s zoological park that preserves Himalayan fauna like red panda, yak, Tibetan wolves, Himalayan bear, Siberian tiger and breeding snow leopards (Closed for the Public). This place will give you a complete experience of Himalayas Flora and Fauna as well as one can spend unforgettable time with family and friends. There are around 21 species out of 136 Mammals, 16 species out of 206 birds, 4 species out of 8 reptiles and 19 amphibians.
The Zoological Park is located at the downhill of Birch Hill (Currently known as Jawahar Parbat). Car and Taxi are not allowed up to the gate. To reach Darjeeling zoo, you have two ways. One is mall road and keep walking on around half an hour to reach on the entrance gate and second is Lebong cart road, you can reach there by car and taxi blow the Zoo and park car along with roadside. It is 4 to 5 minutes uphill walk to reach up to the gate.
Apart from Thursday, the Zoo opens all days from 8:30am to 4:30 pm in summer and 8:30 am to 4:00pm in winter season. Admission free of the Darjeeling Zoo is 40/100 (Camera and Video Rs 10/25) for Indian/Foreigners. You can visit any time of the Year.
