Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Goa

The name Salim Ali Sanctuary was give after late Dr. Salim Moizzudin Abdul Ali that was known India’s best ornithologist so Government of Goa and Forestry Department decided in 1988 that they will protect the birdlife and they will give name Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. The sanctuary is located on western part of the Chorao Island along with Mandovi River. .

SABS is mangrove habitat. Visitors can look different species of plants and birds. Species are striated heron and western reef heron, little bittern, red Knot. The sanctuary is rich in mangrove vegetation and covered tropical evergreen and semi wet deciduas forests.

The SABS is 10 km away from capital of Goa, 21 km away from Bichloim. From these points, Everyone need to take a bus and cab and ferry across the Mandovi River and reached Island of Chorao and walk only little distance, you will reach at SABS. The sanctuary is in 178 ha.

SABS is open throughout the year and best time for visiting is between Novembers to February. In these months different species migrate in SABS. Visitors can watch different type of birds through paved walk and entry time is 6.00 am to 6.00 pm.
